Meet Jim Gillen – Founder, Retirement Plan Team
Jim Gillen’s journey into retirement planning wasn’t linear—but it was deeply intentional.
Born and raised just outside Pittsburgh, Jim earned his degree in Accounting in Ohio before moving to the Chicagoland area to begin his professional career. But numbers weren’t his only passion. Jim found himself drawn to the vibrant world of fine art, working in sales and marketing for galleries and exhibitions that took him across the country. He spent six years immersed in that world—learning to appreciate detail, storytelling, and the beauty in layered perspective.
Eventually, Jim returned to his financial roots, entering the Financial Services industry with positions at Prudential and MetLife. Though he gained valuable experience at both, rapid corporate changes disrupted client service and internal operations. Jim knew there had to be a better, more reliable way to serve people planning their financial future.

More About Jim
In 2016, he founded Retirement Plan Team to do just that. Jim blended his financial expertise with the human-centered lens he developed in the art world. He built a firm rooted in trust, education, and long-term strategy—one that helps both organizations and individuals create a sustainable path toward retirement.
He currently consults and advises on defined contribution plans including 401(k), 403(b), 401(a), and 457(b) plans, helping clients answer the all-important question: “What do I do now?”
Jim is a father, a friend, an adventurist, and an avid runner. He believes retirement planning should be as dynamic and personal as the lives it supports.
